Westinghouse Atom Smasher History In 1916, the Westinghouse Research Laboratories were established in Forest Hills PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, as the company's mechanics department. Divisions for metallurgy, magnetics, physics and chemistry were created in order to improve the water turbines and electrical generations they were producing. The tower, named the Atom Smasher, is 65 feet tall, 30 This large, pear-shaped tower once stood straight up and out of the Westinghouse Research Laboratory. This 5 million volt Van de Graaff Generator, AKA Westinghouse Atom Smasher, was designed by physicists and was built in 1937.

Westinghouse Electric Corporation completed the atom smasher in 1937 as the nation’s first industrial nuclear generator. Silversmith’s investment company bought the property from Westinghouse parent, CBS Corp., in 2013.

This accelerator worked by static electricity from a Van de Graaff generator, which was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1929. The Westinghouse Atom Smasher was a 5 MeV Van de Graaff electrostatic nuclear accelerator operated by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation at their Research Laboratories in Forest Hills, Pennsylvania. [1] It was instrumental in the development in practical applications of nuclear science for energy production. Westinghouse Atom Smasher (made in 1937) 17 comments.

Built in 1937, the atom smasher was an integral piece of cutting edge nuclear physics research conducted here at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory campus. In 1958 this particular atom smasher was decommissioned in favor of more powerful particle accelerators, but it remained the most visible representation of the atomic age here in western PA.
